Week Fifty Two

Omaha Entertainment Awards in review

Posted in Art news, general interest by sarahbakerhansen on 9 January 2009

So like I said, I’m doing a full write-up this week in the Reader, so check that out if you like. But meanwhile, here’s some of my favorite moments from the evening:

  • Renee Ledesma Hoover’s shock at taking home the Best 3D Artist award was one of the best moments of the night: its always great when someone wins and didn’t expect it.
  • The guitarist from Sabor, one of the night’s performers, gave two guitar solos that rivaled Carlos Santana in skill, showmanship and snazzy dressing. This band (which played with later winner Kris Lager Band) should have opened the show.
  • It was great to see some of Omaha’s small yet mighty galleries (Pulp, RNG, A Moving Gallery) being recognized for showing such innovative work. Bravo.
  • The tribute to the late Kent Bellows, who won the Lifetime Achievement award in the visual arts, was lovely, as were the words from his two sisters; it was clear how much the recognition meant.
  • While I waited backstage to present, members of the amazing Salem Baptist Church Choir warmed up with stomping feet, hand claps, amens, hoots, hollers and some very nice dance moves. My nerves melted away thanks to an exceptionally nice member of the choir who sang me a little ditty before going on stage and totally rocking the house. (Did you see the amazing woman with the shining blonde afro? She looked even more amzing up close.)
  • What’s my one wish for next year? That the visual arts portion of the night can somehow figure out a way to better show what great work the visual arts nominees and winners are creating, and do it during the show. Somehow, the flash of a painting on a video screen just doesn’t cut it.
  • And next year, also, maybe the show will finally make that 90 minute mark. Maybe.
